I used to live less than a block away, and I loved this place - best Indian food I've had in the city. But I went back for dinner last night (after not having eaten there for about a year) and had a very disappointing meal. The food was OK but not great, served fast but not very warm. My dish was spicier than I expected when I asked for "mild," and the naan wasn't very good. Most disappointing was the lemonade (with mint and ginger), which I order every time I'm there. I used to love it, but this time I couldn't drink more than a few sips; it did not taste good. Did they lose the old recipe? The service at Indus Valley is always weird -- not exactly "friendly," and a little aggressive with the up-selling. But I don't care about that when the food is great. After last night I think I'll stick to the cheaper Indian options. And I'll stop recommending that lemonade.

I went to Indus Valley on a whim with very little cash. We had a great time! Immediately seated even though the house was packed! Served very quickly as well! Formal atmosphere, but not so much so that you cannot walk in wearing jeans. Low price and cheerful staff! Almost a bit too eager, but that is better than being ignored! Even for two poor students this was incredibly reasonable and lovely! The food was fantastic, in taste and texture! Only real complaint was strongly disliking the lemonade.... It is kind oƒ crounded and loud, but so are most places in NYC!

There is no redeeming aspect of this food. I asked the person taking our order what the house specialties are in terms of chicken and veg and she said: Tikka masala and palak paneer. So that's what I ordered, plus a mango lassi and a kheer. It was horrid. Far too creamy and borderline sweet. It didn't taste like anything at all really. And even the mango lassi was awful Far too expensive for Indian food that is anything but India. Maybe we ordered the wrong items but I"m not going to waste my time on ordering again. The only good thing was that the food arrived in a timely fashion. Will not order again

I lived in New York for three years and Indus Valley was by far my favorite restaurant. I currently live in Indiana, and not a day goes by where I don't crave their delicious food. If you can only eat at one restaurant in the city, this is it.

I have to agree with other reviewers who say this is the best Indian food on the UWS.  I've lived in India and would say this is the closest to "authentic" Indian food I have tried so far in New York.   I also agree the saag aka palak is great!

We came here for my birthday. Food was OK, nothing horrible, but not worth the prices, and not special. The service and attitudes of waitstaff were so cold and hostile it spoiled the celebration; I was really embarrassed to have chosen this spot and to make it up to my friends I picked up the check. I can't think of anyplace on the Upper West Side that does have good Indian food. Lesson learned.

We had a circular cushy booth for the five of us and we asked if we could share several entrees family style. They individually served us portions of each dish and left remainders at the table. service was attentive. Food was yummy. Though it was definitely not hot-spicy, it was a flavorful and a wonderful fusion of old and new. I would pass on the saag paneer--that is one dish that seems to be hit-or-miss wherever you go. A tad expensive, but in NYC, it's nice when you get what you paid for in quality, rather than greasy, unpalatable quantity. In terms of portion size, all the curries were served in the standard "a-la-carte" metal bowls i have seen at other NYC low-end "curry cafeterias". Will definitely go back once i save up.
