Pretty much the best of the lot
I have been a regular and have taken guests there from Malaysia, Australia, UK and the of course all my out-of town US friends. They all agree this is overall the best. The Chow-kwey-teow is the best in town although I have not tried Curry Leave's in Queens with a more authentic Ipoh version with baby clams(not my favorite 'meat' although it is the 'juice' that gives it a better 'smokier' taste but they use dried rice noodles(Pad Thai cut) which nullifies that advantage. This dish needs fresh ingredients. Disappointed that New Malaysian removed PoPiah from their menu, too much work/lack of demand they say. They were the best where Nonya's were inconsistent. Curry noodles with Yong Tau Fu, Sara Burong, Satay, Roti Chanai, belachan green beans and ice kachang(a.k.a. Singapore Ice/ABC) are above average here. Hainan Chicken Rice, while not my cup-of-tea, seem to be popular with other diners. The great thing is they are consistent! No credit cards though so I don't know what reviewer 'Anonymus' is talking about, probably rated the wrong restaurant here.

Best Scrambled Egg Beef Hor Fun
Anonymous on 01/10/2009: you must have gotten the wrong restaurant. They neither serve wine nor take credit cards at New Malaysia. It's one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Manhattan.

Favorite Malaysian in NYC
I think the previous reviewer made a mistake and posted on the wrong restaurant because as far as I know New Malaysia does not accept credit cards. My wife and I had dinner here last night probably our 7th dinner there and we love, love, love, this place the food is great the servers are friendly and the bill is cheap, whats not to like. my favorite is the beef rendang, coconut rice and lemonade ice tea, the perfect meal. this may be my favorite meal in the city. and I have lived in this City my whole life and have been to most of the big name restaurants and a million of the smaller places and this is great food.

Abusive and rude staff. Avoid.
Unless you don't mind rude and abusive staff I would recommend avoiding this place. Food was mediocre to good and choice of wine was subpar white or red from the same producer. Icing on the cake was how the service turned sour at the end when we tried to pay with 4 cards for four people - at first they refused and when they finally caved they didn't divide the total (it was random, ranging from $24 to $36, each card a different total). Pointing it out was futile as they were not even replying at all. You can do much better than this place for food and certainly for service. They do not deserve the business. I will certainly never return.

So so
We went here seeing the crowds but were disappointed by the food. The roti canai was superb. The chicken rendang was exactly the same as nasi lemak chicken. The quality of the chicken meat was subpar. Waiters were not polite which was expected. It was more of a mixed restaurant serving SE Asian food than just Malaysian

Great food!
Love the Malaysian food here. Am originally from Singapore and this was like home away from home. The best hawker food we ordered: Penang Prawn Mee Soup (definitely comfort food) and Roti Canai (Indian flaky bread with a thin curry). Best cooked dishes: Asam Sting Ray Fish In Banana Leaf (heaven on earth!), Kang-kung Belacan, (Kang Kung is Water Convolus - vegetable belachan-shrimp paste), Beef Rendang (dried Curry Beef) (reminiscent of the rendang you get in Indonesia), Hainanese Chicken (make sure you also order the Hainanese Chicken Rice, a must! Comes with ginger/garlic sauce and the best Hainanese Chicken Chilli Sauce ever!) Definitely going back for more!! Ambiance: well, what can you say, the food is cheap and so good, you can forgo the ambiance.

Not quite Hamburg, but...
Try the Indian mee goreng. It's marked hot but I could use hotter. It is delicious, though. As is every dish I've ordered here over the years. The wait is a plus. A lot of attention is given to each individual order. The arcade outside should not deter you.
