great!
This is one of my top 10 restaurants in the city- $ to $$$ all included! Has fun, kitschy atmosphere & great staff. Feels like you step back in time! Order the hot borscht and a grilled cheese sandwich with swiss and tomato. My favorite! Also fabulous is the vegetarian lasagna. OMG- any of the soups kick tail! "Hilary" fm below- take note & order fm above :) ENJOY!

Better than Mother's
I found B&H over 46years since my days at New York University. The Challah, Blintzes and Pierogie have been consistantly great over the years. (Better than Mom's and she was a great cook) Though I have moved to New Jersey I find that I must call my friend Raffe at B&H to place my outgoing orders.. My children and now their spouses look forward to a care package from B&H. Brings back fond memories when I visit the store. Keep up the good work. Raphael

best foods to get at the B and H
The homemade blintzes served with thick sour cream are amazing (I recommend the apple). The pierogies are great. Love the cabbage soup (which is only served 2 days a week). The best part of the soups (and eggs) is that they are served with slices of buttered Challah bread of which we always order extra. We take a loaf of this bread home, but it is never the same when we slice and butter it ourselves! They make delicious French toast with this Challah. My husband has gone to the B and H for over 30 years. He introduced me and we then introduced our kids. They've introduced their friends. No one has been disappointed! There are only about 12 seats at the counter and a few small tables, but that is part of the authentic atmosphere that we love. The service is always friendly, just say what you want! We travel from Ct just to go here.

Hilary...
It's a deli. They specialize in soup, sandwiches, eggs, etc. Try their amazing tuna melt or any of their great soups. Stay away from hot "entrees." This deli is no flash, but the true New York delicatessen experience. A cup of coffee late at night with a slice of cake. A sandwich and soup. A wisecrack and prompt service from the counter-staff. That's what B&H is all about.

I just don't get it
Just had my second meal at B&H. I went originally as I'd read rave reviews and wanted to go somewhere off the beaten tourist track. I didn't like the first meal(macaroni cheese) as there was no flavour and the "cheese" tasted very artificial. I thought it must have been an off day so whilst in NY last week I thought I'd give it another go. I had sauteed veg with rice. Does sauteed mean something else in the US - I expected maybe a stir fry but it was just boiled rice and steamed veg with no flavour - no herbs or spices, not even salt! It's not just because it's cheap because I've had cheaper meals elsewhere which were delicious. Where am I going wrong? Will someone please tell me what to order so that I can feel part of the B&H fan club as I'm feeling very left out! I must say though that the service was very quick and friendly.

This place gives me tears of joy
Having grown up on NY in the 70's (when NY was really fun and interesting) I miss my funky, low-rent, un-renovated hometown. This place is one of the few places where that NY still exists, and I love it to death. Renovate? Bite your tongue really hard until it falls out of your mouth! It should be landmarked! The food is great, the staff very friendly and they will give you a half-and-half half split pea and half vegetable. Try it, it rocks. I bring all my out of town guests here, and my friend from Bologna (home of Bolognese sauce, mind you) said it was the best restaurant in NY.
